The 56 members of the Norwalk High School Class of 1949 who attended their 60th anniversary reunion Sunday at Shore & Country Club had so much fun that they've asked the reunion committee to schedule a two-day event for the next milestone in 2014.
"I had so many come up to me and make that suggestion that we will certainly consider it," said Phyllis Nero DiDio, committee chairman class treasurer and retired teacher who has born the burden of leading preparations for the reunions the past several milestones.
Not many others took the microphone during the festivities, but Jonathan Lovejoy, retired Norwalk lawyer, a clarinetist in high school, stepped up to speak briefly about his days as a musician, and especially about the late Alton Fraleigh, an innovative music director who established a legacy for creative teaching that has come down to the current director Jeff Smith. now in he in
Sheila Olsen Chidester, another retired teacher, also spoke briefly, noting how lucky her peer group is to have grown up in Norwalk when it.
"We were lucky to grow up here when we did," she said from the viewpoint of a grandmother of several who has seen the quality of life diminish for successive generations.
Sal Nuzzo, one of the most successful business men spawned in the class, (CEO of three sizable corporations) spoke with some incredulity about the awesome cost of education, such as the $27,000 tuition for some private pre-kindergarten schools.
Alan Staack, a highly successful local builder, spoke of the high cost of living in this part of the nation compared with a state such as Utah where his daughter and her family live.
"They can join a private golf club out there for $10,000, and pay only $3,500 dues, whereas here its $65,000 to join a club and well over $10,000 in maintenance fees."
His daughter has a home with 5,000 square feet that cost but half a million and the taxes are only $3,500.
"We'll never see the back here," he said.
Staack was sitting with longtime buddies Henry "Hank" Gregory and Walter Court, a trio which has been supportive of NHS and its alumni association for several years. All three were members of the undefeated state champion NHS eleven of 1948. Elsewhere in the room were other team members John "Jack" Ryan and Peter Bottone, who roomed with Nuzzo at Yale College before going of to become a noted bridge designer. Retired Brien McMahon High School Principal James Forcellina is another who made a mark in public education.
Everyone was happy to see Michael Gallo, a retired top executive with Columbia Records, make it even though he leaned a bit on two of his three sons for support. He is also the proud father of four daughters. John Gardella, oldest of the five celebrated offspring of empire builder Louis Gardella, attended as did John McDermott, who began a lawyer who recently moved to the Pine Point section of the city.
Patricia Fodor Dunn of Cheshire is finally retired after running a highly successful manufacturing company. NHS baseball hurler Frank Fiaschetti also dropped in from Bedford, Va. Webster and Cynthia Polasko Pierce came from Maine for the gathering, an enduring pair who met in high school.
Everyone missed Dorothy Munhall Magyar, chairman of the reunion committee for several years until moving to Florida, is recently widowed with the death of husband, Joseph, an outstanding who retired after a full career with SNET.
A brief moment of silence allowed reminiscences of the 83 classmates who are known to have passed away since graduation, the original class numbering 345. Five deceased since the 55th anniversary reunion are: Alice Horan Spinola, Marion Puskas Huzina, Mary Allen Strand, Barbara Langdon Hart and William "Bill" Zakhar, an outstanding high school basketball player who had a full career as a physical education instructor in the Norwalk schools, principally at Rowayton School.

Seven members of the original Norwalk High School Class of February 1938 met for lunch at the South Norwalk Boat Club on July 11, to commemorate their 71st reunion.
A total of 25 were in attendance including family members. This class was the last February class to graduate from Norwalk High School and the last class to complete its three years at the old West Avenue High School where double sessions were required because of crowding. The school was demolished to make way for the Connecticut Turnpike.
The graduating class numbered only 52 because class members were offered the opportunity to move up to the June 1937 class or back to the June 1938 class in an effort to reduce the number of members graduating in February.
As a result, the class was one of the smallest ever to graduate from Norwalk High School. Twenty members of the original 52 remain, living in various parts of the country.
The mid-term classes ended with the opening of the new high school building on East Avenue in January 1938 which served as Norwalk’s sole high school until the present school opened in 1971. Headed by Class President Michael E. Errico and his wife, Teddy, who drove up from Virginia, those attending included: Ted Russell and wife Jean from Mohawk, N.Y., and Norwalkers Victor Chariott, John Froleiks, Lois Seymour, Mary DiScala and John Mitaly and his wife Helen. Ida Hynes, of Norwalk; Catherine Reda of West Haven and Joel Fairfax, of Madison, were last minute no- shows because of physical ailments.
Members of the class have met for yearly luncheons since its 50th reunion in 1988. Next year, most members will be celebrating their 90th birthdays. But the luncheons will continue, according to Errico. Next year's observance is scheduled for July 10.

The Norwalk High School combined Classes of February and June of 1937 observed their 72nd anniversary reunion last week when 16 members gathered for lunch at the Shore & Country Club.
Ellen Saabye Kirtland was host to the classes and was assisted in making the arrangements by Marjorie Hammond Johnson.
The two classes were the last to graduate from the "yellow brick building" on West Avenue which served as NHS from 1909 to 1938. The members are in their 90th years, and believe they may be the oldest high school classmates still having annual reunions.
Attending from the June class were Herman Fullin, M. Evelyn Hodge, Angelica Tavella Sargent and Marjorie Wargo Rysz. February class attendees were Maury Cooke Bassler Flack, Virginia Crosby Mahoney, Vera Flynn Trenck, Bessie Guss Room, Rose King, Marjorie Malkin Emmerthal, Carmine and Mafalda Scordo, Walter and Jane Spatta, Johnson and Kirtland.
Joining the 16 classmates were 10 relatives or best friends. The class also remains in touch through newsletters issued each January and August.
